SPOILERS AHEAD:
Cordell wakes up in the morning to find August cooking breakfast while Stella texts Trevor. Cordell is impressed by August’s cooking abilities, though slightly worried about his use of a blow torch. After he burned his hand on the hot skillet, Cordell tells his kids that Abeline and Bonham are still camping but they pass on their good luck for her game. Cordell promises to try and make it to her game, to which Stella does her best impression of her father’s promises. August chimes in that he can show his dad the footage as he’s filming the game with Ruby. Cordell remarks on the amount of time they have been spending together and August admits he’s going to ask her to the dance. After a bit of talking, Cordell leaves to check on Micki.
He meets Trey at the door and they exchange banter over his hand hurting before Trey leaves to take the kids to the soccer game. Micki greets Cordell and tells him about her mother being detained in San Antonio for a DWI hit-and-run, which she doesn’t believe happened as her mom doesn’t drink. She’s still reeling so he offers to go with her so they can make it an official case.
In Mexico, Captain James tells Walker to take all the time he needs before hanging up. Liam emerges and they both don’t like lying to Walker or Bret. They can’t say much other than that they suspect Carlos Mendoza’s case wasn’t a slam dunk, but Larry still isn’t sure why an innocent man would lie about killing Emily. Liam adds that Geri is still MIA, with Larry adding that Geri was two miles away at the time of Emily’s killing, but it doesn’t explain the sketchy payments made from the Side Step.
Trey loads up the gear and bags with the help of August, while Stella nervously texts Trevor as he’s late. August shows Ruby the camera he brought then begins to ask her to the dance when the newest A/V member, Todd, approaches. It becomes clear they are together with Todd taking her to the dance. August lies that he was going to tell Ruby he could cover the dance so she could go with Todd. Bel watches the scene and calls him over under pretenses and sympathizes with him over not being able to reciprocate feelings. Coach Bobby calls to the team to board the bus, just as Trevor pulls up and greets Stella. He remembers meeting with his father at the prison, as Clint wants revenge for Duke killing Trevor’s mother.
Micki pays Adriana’s bail, thinking the arrest is racial-profiling and remarks that the ACLU will have a field day. Adriana is angry when she learns Micki bailed her out and refuses to talk to the media, telling Micki she is guilty.
Micki and Cordell follow Adriana home to spy on her since Micki doesn’t believe her mom is guilty. She gives Cordell the evidence which includes a religious pendant that she claims Adriana would never wear as she thinks the church is an organized mafia. As they talk Adriana emerges from her house so they follow her. At the hotel, the students enter the hotel while Trey hands out forms to the students. Trevor and August talk about Stella which August is fine with, but asks for his advice on how to get a girl to like him. Todd intervenes and teaches him the UV-13 method, wanting him to find the right lighting at 42 degrees and walk 13% slower. August rejects the idea as he doesn’t want to be someone he isn’t.
In Mexico, Liam talks to an art store gallery owner when Larry enters. He distracts her while Liam takes photos of the logs.
Walker and Micki follow Adriana to a house in a lower-income area, with Cordell thinking she is visiting a friend. Micki reminisces about once knowing her mom. Adriana would take her to watch the trolleys to calm her down at night, which made her feel loved. Then something changed and Adriana wanted to protect her while Micki wanted to protect others. Walker sympathizes and they try to figure out why Adriana would lie. They deduce that someone in San Antonio might be threatening her so Walker has Connie send over Adriana’s old case. He assures her that he always has her back.
At the hotel, August notices that Ruby is speaking Spanish to her parents and is emotional. She tells him they aren’t home as they’re in Mexico, as they would have been deported so they left on their own. He didn’t know as she hasn’t told anyone yet but is frustrated that she can’t even hug her parents when they are so close. Meanwhile, Stella tells Trevor about “Thirsty Balls” an underground keg scrimmage that is held each year. He zones out while she’s talking but assures her that he wants to be there, though he had a weird talk with his dad and he got under his skin and in his head. The only reason he came to Texas was to be close to his dad, but he wants to be far away at the same time. She understands but tells Trevor not to leave just because of his dad. It’s not their job to inherit their father’s baggage
Walker and Micki approach Mercedes Ruiz to ask her about Adriana, though Mercedes stonewalls them as she claims to be a patient of Adriana’s before leaving. Micki recognizes the religious bracelets on Mercedes’ wrist.
The partners go to a food truck to discuss their leads, but they have too many potential police officers that could be upset with Adriana. He loves the food and she admits that the guy who owns the truck was the first guy she arrested. Walker draws parallels between Adriana being willing to help anyone regardless of the consequences and Micki wanting to do the same now. Micki finds Officer Mike Stevenson who has made a bunch of calls to Adriana that appear to be harassment.
Larry talks to the art gallery owner and she flirts with him. She gives him her number and he leaves. Once he’s gone, she calls to tell a man that the guy who arrested her uncle was in her gallery.
Stella and the team setup Thirsty Balls while Bel tells August about the events going on - the shot for shot arena, Alice in Wonderland Beer Pong, and the Penalty Kick where if you miss the shot you have to eat the worm at the bottom of a bottle of alcohol. He gets distracted by Todd and Ruby’s flirtations so Bel challenges Todd to a penalty kick. Ruby and August talk and she asks if he wants a drink before leaving. Trevor compliments August on being himself to which he admits it’s hard to get the 42 degrees on a cloudy day.
Micki and Walker visit Stevenson and he recognizes her because of Adriana. He knows that she wouldn’t eat hearts of palm as a child because she thought it was real hearts and that her favorite movie isn’t Fargo. He tells Micki it isn’t what she thinks it is and Walker pieces together that Stevenson is dating Adriana, just as she emerges with steaks and calls Stevenson honey.
Larry notices that every purchase is from Austin and Liam points out that Larry spent four days talking to the owner. Larry points out an address that belongs to the Northside Nation, a Texas gang and the addresses are their business fronts. They wonder if Emily angered a crime syndicate. That could also explain why Mendoza isn’t talking, and Liam realizes that Walker was right to want to keep digging and they shouldn’t have stopped him. Larry warns that just because they reopen the case doesn’t mean they’ll get a different outcome.
Micki and Adriana talk about Adriana’s relationship with Officer Mike Stevenson, with Micki wondering why Adriana was able to date a cop but can’t accept Micki as one. Meanwhile, Walker and Mike talk about his upcoming psych analysis. Adriana interjects that it’s what matters after the incident that matters. Mike and Micki fire up the grill with her thanking him for his help after the accident, questioning him, but Adriana intervenes. As the trio argues, Trey calls Walker to tell him that the kids snuck out. Micki and Walker leave to handle the situation with the kids, while Micki promises to leave her mom and the situation alone.
At the game, Trevor and August cheer on Stella until several trucks arrive and drive circles around the girls. Trevor tosses his cup aside and stands in front of the girls to tell the men they were about to leave. The men inform them that this is Southside Nation land but yet, they didn’t get an invite to the party so he demands a payment fee. Trevor informs the older man they don’t have money to pay with but the man ogles Stella and Ruby, saying they have plenty to pay with, to which Trevor insults the man. He proposes playing for the fee, and if one of them can score on him they’ll leave. Stella volunteers against Trevor’s objections. When she kicks the ball toward the goal one of the men shoots the ball. Trevor charges the man and tackles him, knocking the gun to the ground while Stella and August shout for him and the man to stop fighting. The fight continues until the gang members pull guns and aim at Trevor.
Walker speeds to the scene where Walker tackles one of the men, while Trey shouts for the students to hide behind the dunes. Micki engages in a shootout with the gang members, while Trevor stands by and Walker fights another member. Trevor picks up the fallen gun while Walker apprehends the gang member. He points the gun at Walker and calls him Duke, causing him to look up in surprise. Trevor ultimately gives the gun to Walker who yells at him to get behind the dunes. A gang member runs up behind Micki but Trey saves her by slamming his head into the truck.
Walker and Micki talk to the local PD about their arrests, with him being familiar with the Northside Nation after taking down a faction in Austin. He then assures the cop they will take the “shutterbug and redhead” with them to the hotel as they’re his kids. The gang member goads Walker by threatening to hurt Stella once he’s out before slamming into Walker. Walker grabs the perp but restrains himself by instead hitting him with a statute that gains him an extra year for threatening a police officer’s family. When the perp is taken away, Micki is proud of Walker for his restraint - even if he did get the statue wrong. Trey enters with Stella and August. Walker thanks Trey for putting himself on the line for his kids, but Trey is apologetic for letting them run away but Walker is appreciative that he made it right. When Trey and Miki leave, he turns to his kids to ask what they were thinking but is cut-off by his kid’s hugs.
Trevor, Stella, and August take Bel to a field where fireworks go off with a text from her parents telling her to look-up. He gives her a firework knowing that she can’t hug her parents but at least she can give them fireworks back. He worked with Stella to arrange it with Ruby’s parents. August and Bel set off the fireworks while Trevor and Stella talked about what just happened. She tells him to go to the dance with her unless he’s leaving Texas. He assures her that he has a reason to stay and kisses her cheek. August walks to his dad where Micki teases that he didn’t get his humility from his dad. As she looks at the fireworks she remembers a night at the trolley with her mom and another woman, Mercedes Ruiz, who had the bracelet that was found at the accident scene. She abruptly leaves to ask her mom something in-person. She arrives at her moms’ the next morning and confronts her about her memories. She asks who the other woman was, and Adriana admits the other woman is Micki’s mother.
Reeling from the revelation, Micki presses Adriana for answers and learns that the woman is Mercedes, Adriana’s sister who struggled with addiction. When Mercedes went to rehab she left Micki in Adriana’s care, and a two-month stint turned to three years but by the time she came back, Micki was already attached to Adriana. Mercedes claimed she was clean but Adriana didn’t believe it would last and asked her sister to leave them alone, though Mercedes would only agree if Adriana paid her a substantial amount of money. Micki remembers a night at the trolley when the women exchanged an envelope of money. Micki is horrified that Mercedes sold her but is shocked when Adriana reveals that they left their hometown and changed their names. Adriana tells her that her birth name is Nina Ruiz and she was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico but she raised her in a new town to help them avoid Mercedes. Mercedes confronted her last week and got into an accident while drunk, so Adriana took the fall. Micki emotionally leaves.
Stella and Bel play soccer while Trevor and August watch. Trey tells the girls to just have fun with the game before revealing, much to their delight, that he is their new head coach. Bel goes to August to thank him again for what he did for her, but he shrugs it off. She asks him to the dance as friends so he agrees while Ruby watches. Walker talks to Micki who asks him to keep what happened just yet, so he agrees. Micki walks up to Mercedes Ruiz’s house but doesn’t knock. Walker takes a seat on the bleachers but calls Trevor over to talk. He thanks Trevor for what he did for his kids as it took guts, but Trevor thanks him for saving their lives. Walker calls him brave for standing up to the man but Trevor doesn’t see it that way as he had the shot but couldn’t take it. Walker points out the bravery in not shooting as it would have changed his life forever, and Walker doesn’t wish that on anyone especially someone young like Trevor. Before he leaves, Walker promises him a “what are your intentions with my daughter” chat for a later date, and shakes his hand. Trevor returns to his waterboy duties.
Liam and Larry exit their hotel in Mexico with plans to return to Austin and tell Walker what they learned regarding Emily’s case. Larry can’t remember where he parked the car and presses the unlock button, triggering his car to explode.
